The waterproof reading on your jacket or trousers, is the height in millimetres that this column of water would reach, before starting to seep through and compromise the fabric. For example, 5000mm is infact 5 meters of water held back by the fabric. - Taped seams: Even with the most waterproof material in the world, severe conditions can lead to water penetrating your jacket through the tiny holes made by the seams and stitching. By applying thermoplastic tape under heat and pressure, the seams are taped to prevent moisture passing through these tiny holes.
